Sweetwater Offers Upcoming 'Girls Night Out' Classes

Registration is open for embroidery, the art of doodling and knitting classes with the girls.

If you're looking to take a break from the busy world, Sweetwater Center for the Arts offers several opportunities to have a girls night out. Girls Night Out classes are a chance to socialize in a fun environment with the ladies. Friends can bring wine and snacks, and spend some time creating art projects and letting their creative juices flow. All Girls’ Night Out classes are for ages 21 and up. Tuition is $30 for members and $45 for non-members. 5 Things to Know This Week: Battle of the Books and Sweetwater Open House

  Sewickley Public Library will hold the Battle of the Books competition this week starting with the sixth grade on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and the seventh and eighth grades on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The high school competition is on Monday, March 4. The battles take place in Hansen Library at Sewickley Academy.   From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 1 the gallery at Sweetwater Center for the Arts  will showcase the talent of students and instructors during an Open House and Artist Reception. It’s Friday, and you have no plans for the weekend except for watching the Super Bowl on Sunday. Well, take a look at our five ideas and enjoy some fun ahead of the big game.   Fifth Annual Pasta Dinner When/Where: 5 p.m-9 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Church, 405 Frederick Ave., Sewickley.  Why Go: Take a night off from cooking and bring the family to support the Quaker Valley Band. St. James School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2013 beginning Monday, Jan. 28 and concluding with a Mass on Sunday, Feb. 3. This year marks the 100th anniversary for St. James School, and many special activities are planned for the week, which promotes the faith-based education private Catholic schools provide to students. All are invited to the Catholic Schools Week Mass at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, followed by the annual Donut Social in honor of St. James School's 100th anniversary this year. On Monday, Jan. 28 more than 200 Quaker Valley Middle School students in sixth through eighth grades will formally debut the school's new 500-seat auditorium.  The Grand Opening Gala concert begins at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. The annual Pre-School Open House runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 hosted by Sewickley Public Library. Representatives will be available from various facilities to provide information and answer questions about their programs. Fall registration for many of the schools starts in February. Clay Time: Making 'Empty Bowls' at Sweetwater

Volunteers stop by Sweetwater Center for the Arts to create and donate pottery bowls to charity. The bowls are being donated to support the Empty Bowls dinner on March 10.

Gus Zuccaro of Cranberry Township was in fifth grade when his mother bought a wheel and kiln. He’s been making pottery for the past 30 years. Susie Ross of Beaver never touched a pottery wheel until Saturday. “It’s a lot harder than I thought. The people who know how to do it make it look a lot easier,” Ross said. But having years of experience or none at all didn’t matter on Saturday for those who came to Sweetwater Center for the Arts to create bowls in the open ceramics studio. The fundraiser in support of Empty Bowls, a campaign designed to help stop hunger. Bowls are meant to be symbolic of the many who are struggling to feed their families.  About 30 people pre-registered to attend the event, though at least 100 were expected, …

Sweetwater Offers Winter Classes for Children and Adults

Registration is open for numerous classes in the visual, performing, literary and culinary arts for both adults and children beginning at age 3.

Sweetwater Center for the Arts offers a selection of classes for learners of all ages, including classes and workshops for children beginning at age 3. Enrollment is now open for winter 2013 classes, which are offered from January through March. Classes include ceramics and sculpture, cooking, music, drawing, painting, photography, dance, jewelry, fiber arts and traditional crafts.
