On the article Patch Poll: Should UPMC Be Considered a Nonprofit?
Mark Trombetta
7:31 pm on Wednesday, March 27, 2013
ReplyWhether or not WPAHS was well run is irrelevant. The issue is your employer, UPMC and its tax free status. Community Blue is not accepted at UPMC outside of Children's Hospital. That is only because UPMC agreed to keep it open to ALL children as a condition of purchase.

On the article Patch Poll: Should UPMC Be Considered a Nonprofit?

ReplyDianne is following the UPMC corporate propaganda that she received which is different from reality. Community Blue is a lower cost product than some of the UPMC insurance products, and is very desirous by employers because of its cost structure. It reimburses UPMC at the same rate as West Penn Allegheny hospitals. Since there has been a traditional discrepancy in payment [UPMC received 2-3 times what WPAHS received in the past], UPMC excludes Community Blue because it is not as profitable and competes directly with its own products. Highmark has been clear that they will no longer pay UPMC a premium above the market value for healthcare that can be delivered for far less, and in many cases, better than at UPMC. If the UPMC corporate leaders really cared about healthcare the same way the physicians on both sides of the issue do, UPMC would have not sacrificed Braddock Hospital to build UPMC East. There is no money to be made in Braddock, but plenty to be made by duplicating care in Monroeville.

On the article USC School Board Working on Budget without Property Tax Increase

Reply5% is correct.....and you can count on it. If the millage stays the same, it looks as if they did not raise taxes, when in fact they do raise them up to 5% by way of the County assessment which allows up to a 5% windfall. An old Bolas/Petersen staple; every three years at one point.

Reply50 million babies have lost their lives to abortion in America since Rowe v Wade. Who speaks for them, if not those who are unafraid to denouce this horror ? In the past century we have seen millions of lives snuffed out and not much denunciation or action. The Supreme Court has decided that a "privacy" right not found in the Constitution trumps the lives of innocent children. Who speaks for those who cannot, except brave people unafraid of radical criticism?

On the article Upper St. Clair Area Health Center Rates Compared

ReplyThe truth is that the Rec Center [ampersand or not], is not self sustaining. These data descibe the operating expenses only and with all the thousands of members it has [we are told more and more each year], the rates still continue to rise as expenses continue to climb. If you add the 30 million dollar debt service, and the additioanl millions in supporting infrastructure and other development, there is no way the Township can afford to run it without huge tax subsidy. 3000 signatures were not enough to stop the massive overspending. Last year they pounded the young people of the Township with a huge increase since they used it so much. It seems that only a government entity would punish its best customers.

On the article Charter School Participation Increases in Upper St. Clair

Let me help here.
USC gave a multi-million dollar asset [Streams School] to the IBO which is not accountable to the residents of USC. When the IBO threatened to revoke the IB charter unless Streams was all IB, the school board gave in. Do you think the IBO will stop there? Pick which school [Boyce or Ft Couch] is next. The real probelem will be when they want the high school. There is only one. USC gets what it voted for: an expensive educational system led by an out of control school board with an insatiable appetite for our money. IB can best be described as a cult following with no soul. No added value for a moniker which means absolutely nothing. Fluff over real substance. -
On the Blog Post Why No Consideration of Women to be the Next Pope?

ReplyOren,The Catholic Church is not without faults. It is also not unique in scandal. The actual incidence of misconduct is the same throughout all religious sects. You might want to read this article and then further look at those referenced:
http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_16281737
The Church did take a hard stance against these actions and the Church has grown stronger because of it. These acts were not failures of the Church teachings, but of man. With regards to women in the Church; NO religion has recognized a woman above all other men moreso than the Catholic Church which recognizes Mary, the mother of Christ, as a woman unstained by sin and advocating for all of her children directly to her son. She is described Biblically as being "clothed by the sun, with the moon under her feet". Only a woman such as this could be elevated ABOVE the Pope. Only the Catholic churches recognize her as such. While provocative, my friend, you have made gross misstatements here.

The comments by Mr. Fulmer are silly and border on the ridiculous. He facilitated the election of many of the Board Members that currently occupy those seats. Every one of those people cannot manage a public budget. The assertion that there is no tax increase this year is inaccurate. The taxes were raised by the County through reassessment, which has always been an easy way to blame someone else for raising taxes while the increase is hidden by a millage decrease to compensate. Remember that Mrs. Petersen, Mrs. Bolas and the like crushed us with tax increases running up to this year. Mr. Fulmer thinks people in this community are fools and do not understand that the District Budget has been out of control for nearly all of the years that his wife and their cronies have held office. Good people will not run for the Board as they have seen the ugly price that is paid by good people who try to manage public dollars well and align this with improving the quality of education. This climate was nurtured and encouraged by Mr. Fulmer and his Board cronies.
Control through subtle intimidation and fear will always suppress new ideas.
